History
1995-2000
ScanMedic was founded in 1995 as a distributor of Howmedica Osteonics Corporation. The company was started by our family that had been leading a group of companies dealing with the import and distribution of various high-quality products in Hungary.
Our first products on the Hungarian market were iconic products of the orthopaedic field: the Simplex cement, the Exeter hip and the Gamma nail. In 1997 we started the introduction of Howmedica’s Kinemax total knee prosthesis and also its tumor prosthesis product lines.
ScanMedic quickly became known as a distributor of the highest quality, internationally renowned orthopaedic products.
In 1998 Stryker acquired Howmedica and started to reform its global operations accordingly. At that time Stryker had an office in Hungary that dealt with orthopaedic and traumatology product sales. In 1999 Stryker decided to disband its office and gave the exclusive distribution rights to ScanMedic.
the 2000s
After the turn of the millennium we successfully won substantial market shares in the fields of total knee and hip replacements with Stryker’s Scorpio total knee, Exeter hip, ABG hip prosthesis product lines while still selling the updated iterations of the Gamma nail.
We also entered into new markets with neurosurgery, sports medicine and OR-equipment products like power tools, navigation and arthroscopic devices.
We are grateful for the fact that our Partners hold us in high regard not just for the products we distribute but for the services we attach to them. We have always strived to become the fastest, most flexible and approachable supplier – we make sure that our shipments get to the customers in time!
the 2010s
After 15 years of operation ScanMedic was still in the phase of steady, sustainable growth, with two-digit increase from year-to-year. By the middle of the decade ScanMedic proudly supplied almost all state-owned and every university hospitals, including all significant privately owned clinics in Hungary.
In 2016 Stryker started to re-evaluate its international relations and decided to withdraw its presence from most of Central-Eastern Europe, including Hungary. ScanMedic’s contract with Stryker ended at the end of 2018 with the addition that we retained the right to distribute Stryker products that were in our warehouse.
After this decision we decided to continue our business and expansion rather than exiting the market.
In 2017 ScanMedic became the exclusive distributor for the orthopaedic, traumatology and sports medicine products of Smith&Nephew bringing once again new, market-leading products to Hungary. This change in our product portfolio brought us new challenges and opportunities. We managed to keep all of our Partners that were long term users of Stryker products and also succeeded in establishing new accounts with S&N’s extensive range of state-of-the-art medical innovations.
In the following years, to further strengthen our presence in the market, ScanMedic entered into cooperation with a number of multinational suppliers, like 7S Medical in the field of traumatology, Em-med and Aygün in the field of OR-equipment and sterilization and Orthosolutions in orthopaedics.
2020 and beyond
The year 2020 brought difficult situations to the Hungarian medical market, as nearly every other market in every country. ScanMedic decided to do whatever it takes to continue to supply its Partners and to persevere in these exceptional circumstances. Not one employee was let go and not one customer was lost due to this philosophy. ScanMedic will carry on with its operations during and after the pandemic, focusing on professional development and efficient growth.

We have built a strong infrastructural background to be able to deliver the products we distribute to our Partners in a timely and flexible manner. We still are a family-owned and run company that puts emphasis on human connections, ethical operation and customer-oriented sales. We believe in constant learning and support our Partners with useful educational opportunities. These core values and our culture never changed despite the significant advancements in revenue and the substantial changes in the market environment.
